What the flower promises, the fruit shall deliver

Gardening is peaceful and relaxing. Spending time in the garden helps me escape my worries and gives me the feeling of getting back to something basic and important.

This is the home of my little website where I will chronicle the progress and process of starting my own organic homestead on 5 acres in beautiful Springdale, Washington.

About my Homestead:

I am now the proud mortgage payer on 5 mostly level, completely open acres just outside of Sprindale, WA, located about 15 miles from my parents. I also have a shabby 1973 mobile home that is going to be moved onto the land and COMPLETELY redone. I'm interested in recycling, alternative architecture, organic gardening, vegetarian cooking, and a generally more self-sufficient lifestyle. All of which I plan to experiement with on my little homestead. The name I've chosen for my homestead is: Casita de la Pradera -- which is Spanish for Little House of the Prairie.

My goals:

Personal: Once I've lived here a year and the tuition rate drops down to in-state levels I plan to go back to school. I was considering a BA in Anthropology or International Relations and following that up with Law School (my dream job would be working in either international human rights law, or immigration law). But according to the math, there's just no way I will be able to afford law school. So, I plan to get a BA (either in Anthropology or History) and become a teacher. I think it would be a GREAT job to be junior high/high school Social Studies/History teacher. And not only would the job be challenging and fulfilling, but I'd also have summers off for working my organic homestead, and maybe a wee trip whenever I can scrounge up the dough.

As for goals in relation to my homestead, I want to plant a fantastic garden patch, as well as some grain. Additionally I want to get in fruit and nut trees, and begin a small grape arbour, I plan to have chickens for eggs and want to build the chicken coop out of straw bales. I was considering having goats for milk, but now I think I will just grow my own soybeans, and buy a soy milk making gizmo. I was also thinking of getting some pigs to use for tilling and fertilizing the alternating garden patches every year, but now I'm planning on using a no tilling "lasagna" gardening method, so I probably won't get the pigs. I'm also undecided about getting a horse -- if I got one though, it would be a Belgan. I am going to have a greenhouse, that much is for sure, and I hope to be able to grow things like oranges, lemons, limes, dwarf bannana trees, and dwarf avocado tress in it.

Why I want to live on an organic homestead: I want to live a simple, responsible, non-materialistc lifestyle. I want to grow as much of everything I need as I can. I want to know that my fruit and veggies are chemical free and non GMO, and that my chickens are happy and healthy being raised on orchard grass and bugs rather than commercial feeds. I want time to focus on family and friends, avoiding the "rat race" whenever possible. I want to be free.

In the future this site will contain updated information about my life, and the progress of my homestead projects. Very soon you can expect to see photos of my land, and photos of the house, before, during, and after it's re-working process.

Tip of the Day

Climbing vines can be a beautiful addition to your garden. But beware -- certain kinds of vines can become a nuisance if too vigorous for your climate. Check with your local nursery before you plant them.
